Backpacking in Kyushu (Kumamoto)

Japan Adventure - 2019 Summer Trip
#trip #backpacking

“To awaken quite alone in a strange town is one of the most pleasant sensations in the world. You are surrounded by adventure.”

Exploring Kyushu is one of the most exciting solo adventures I’ve had. The places I visited were limited since it was raining on most of the days I was here. Nonetheless, the rain gave a fresh and gloomy sensation at the same time. I took advantage of the SUNQ Pass which gave me unlimited bus rides to these places for three days.

Kumamoto - Days 1 and 2
It was late afternoon when I arrived in Kumamoto city. I flew from Tokyo to Fukuoka and took a 2-hour bus ride to Kumamoto City from the airport (Highway bus information office is located near the Information Center at the airport. The staff speaks English). I went straight to Kumamoto Castle even though it was pouring. Unfortunately, because of the damage, it had from the earthquake in 2018, there was not a lot to see - only a glimpse of the castle from afar.

Still raining, I started my second day checking the shops along Kamitori Shopping Street. It is a popular shopping arcade located in the center of the city. Walking distance from Kumamoto Castle is Kato Shrine and Sakura-no-Baba/Johsaien. Suizenji Garden is a Japanese style garden built in the 17th century. The most beautiful I have been so far. No side trips since it has been raining for two days.
