No guts; no glory.
One of the best climbs I have done so far. Mt. Mitou is the highest mountain in the Okutama Sansan.
It was supposed to be an early hike but I lost an hour because of my stupidity (lol). I got off at the wrong bus and then I had to wait about an hour for the next bus to take me near the trail.
I took the bus from Okutama station and got off at Miyamabashi bus stop 深山橋. I followed the Murokubo Ridge ムロクボ尾根. The hike to the first peak (Nukazasu ヌカザス山) was the steepest and it continues until you reach the peak of Mt. Mitou.
It took me a couple of weeks to recover from this hike. Since I also hiked Mt. Gozen the day after this.
There are two peaks on Mt. Mitou and both have good views of the surrounding plane on a clear day. Unfortunately, I did not have a clear day.
I planned to cross the floating bridge down on the lake so I retraced my way back to Nukazasu ヌカザス山 and followed the signs to Lake Okutama. It was steep the whole time going down so my knees took all the beating. It never stopped. My legs were starting to shake but I was happy I did this exit route since I was the only one on the trail. I took my time and enjoyed the peacefulness of the mountain. The common route off the mountain is the way down to Tokyo Citizen’s Forest. I think most of the hikers at the peak took that exit.
When it rains, it pours. The floating bridge was closed due to bear sightings near the banks. So I went back to the same bus stop (Miyamabashi bus stop 深山橋) I got off in the morning. It took me about 30 minutes but luck was still on my side since the bus arrived right after I reached the waiting shed.
I spent the night at a hostel near Ome station. Had a good rest and prepared for the next hike the following day.
